Songs of Wood and Stone is ambient soundscape composed from a series of binaural field recordings of artists working with stone and wood to create sculptures as part of the group exhibition: BasementOverground: Emergence.
'Emergence' is an exhibition about material and the human interaction that transforms it into works of art. My piece explores this process through the collection and reworking of the raw sounds of the sculptural making process into a multi-layered composition, creating new rhythms and forms.
The processing of playing these sounds and sculpting them live became an echo of the sculptors’ work, somewhat hypnotic and meditative. As these layers of wood and stone that were built up for so long are stripped and processed, so the sound of this becomes raw material for exploration. In some sense my process became a mirror to theirs, taking the sounds of the shards of material being slowly removed and stretching and building them up into something new, like a slow reversing echo.
This piece is best experienced on headphones.
