entwined at lightwaves festival

Commissioned by Quays Culture for Lightwaves Festival in Salford Quays, Entwined was co-created with artist Alicja Mrozowska as part of a new creative partnership are you playing out exploring a confluence between sound, light, sculpture, painting and technology.

Entwined is an evocative light installation that celebrates the intricate connections within Salford, inviting viewers to engage with the community’s dynamic spirit. This piece combines sound, light, sculpture, and painting to create a multi-sensory experience.

At the heart of the artwork is a network of tubular structures. These curvilinear forms undulate and intertwine, pulsating with vibrant colours and light. The surfaces of the structures are adorned with paintings based on 35mm analogue photographs taken around Salford, woven together, blending people with places.

The sound component of Entwined consists of binaural field recordings and voice notes supplied through an open call, meticulously mixed to produce immersive soundscapes that range from abstract and ambient to familiar sounds of daily life. This auditory experience reflects the vibrant interactions that unfold within Salford’s community.

The woven paper elements in the artwork pay homage to Salford’s industrial heritage, particularly its history of textile production and weaving. The painted surfaces incorporate imagery of plants, people, and iconic locations in Salford featuring bold brush strokes that balance abstract and figurative elements.

Entwined represents a continuation of our exploration of the confluence of analogue and digital art forms, inviting viewers to explore the familiar and experience the unexpected.
