Aquarium at Athens Science festival
Commissioned by Scico for the 10th Anniversary climate themed edition of Athens Science Festival, Aquarium is an immersive and interactive audio visual installation investigates perceptions of scale and humankind’s innate belief in our importance and sense of entitlement as the sentient centre of the universe.
In Aquarium we step into an immersive underwater world, a surrealist seascape where humans have fled the climate disasters that they have precipitated to seek refuge in the vastness of the ocean.
We can see the pollution and detrimental effects of this at first harmonious looking habitat incursion become more and more noticeable as we once again try to bend the environment to our will in an endless drive for consumption and comfort. We are now the creators and the inhabitants of our own giant aquarium, eventually to become its potential destroyers. Where next?
As part of the project, local volunteers were engaged to collect discarded waste from the local marine areas to place in the installation, forming a border and a stark illustration of the problems of pollution.
